Welcome to Mr. RESPA’s Website. This is the site of Grant E. Mitchell, Esq. Mr. Mitchell was the long-time lawyer and interpreter of the Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act ("RESPA") for the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development ("HUD").
When Mr. Mitchell left HUD in April 1999 and went into private practice with Reed Smith LLP in their Washington office the "National Mortgage News" noted this in an article entitled "Mr. RESPA Leaves HUD." Mr. Mitchell was subsequently employed by Lotstein Buckman LLP and BuckleySandler LLP ending in mid-2009.
Mr. Mitchell advises clients regarding RESPA issues, as well as those involving the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) programs, also administered by HUD. He frequently serves as an expert witness in RESPA or other residential mortgage cases. He is a regular speaker at trade organization conferences, and on audio and videoconferences. In 2001 and 2002 he was a co-editor of Pratt’s Mortgage Compliance Letter, where he wrote the Ask Mr. RESPA column as well as other articles on residential lending issues. On July 23, 2003, Mr. Mitchell was interviewed exclusively on a half hour program on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal discussing residential finance. He has been extensively quoted in USA Today and other national publications. The American Banker published his Viewpoint article on RESPA reform issues on August 18, 2003. The October 2003 issue of Origination News contains his commentary on RESPA reform. In December 2007 the Aspatore Division of Westlaw published his article "Will RESPA Reform be Part of Reshaping Residential Mortgage Lending".
